Immersion program in visual literacy

For experienced early childhood professionals and volunteers who want to sharpen skills.

For students in undergraduate and graduate teaching programs.

For museum volunteers who want to work with preschool and early elementary audiences

Three full days (consecutive or weekly) followed by a mid-year workshop and 15 hours of on-site and/or phone/ email support for professionals*.

  • Introduce the visual literacy process its uses and flexibility.
  • Focus on observation, critical thinking, and communication skills and implications for language development, reading readiness and science/math readiness.
  • Explore the depth of local visual resources and their appropriate use for families with young children
  • Practice how to incorporate visual literacy process into enrich current curriculum or program.

Includes materials suggesting parent-child, community, and classroom enrichment. Team of classroom and family support professionals and/or volunteers encouraged. (See Museum as a Resource and/or Messages of the Built Environment.)

*This program, with the addition of a concluding paper, was used for 30 hours of graduate credit at Catholic University, Washington, DC
