LLF programs draw on 3 core beliefs:
- Parents have a wealth of untapped personal resources with which to teach children.
- Creativity knows no economic boundaries.
- Learning is a social skill.
LLF programs guide parents and other adults to recognize their own creativity and to use it to teach, guide and enjoy young children. Through LLF programs parents and teachers learn to use the community as a teaching environment and sharpen their capacity to link formal and informal education.
Messages of the Built Environment, LLF’s flagship program, explores the lines, shapes, colors of the neighborhood to make abstract concepts become real for children.
Parenting for Literacy, applies Messages concepts in a supervised parent-child environment.
Museum as a Resource takes familiar lines, shapes, and colors into typically unfamiliar environments and help families develop confidence in their ability to see, to understand, and to have confidence in their own judgments.
Community Builds and Family Field trips establish a social environment for enhancing informal teaching and learning skills within families.
Perfectly Punctual helps families support good work habits in children from the outset of school.
LLF programs are supported by training, technical assistance, and materials. Direct service is possible within 60 miles of DC. Train-the-trainer, consulting, and technical assistance services are offered nationally.
