Frequently Asked Questions

happyWhat does LLF mean by Parent Involvement?

LLF defines parent involvement as parent participation in children’s education.

Who are typical LLF partners?

  • Preschool, daycare and elementary schools/systems
  • Adult education systems
  • National organizations serving early childhood and adult educators
  • Colleges of education providing in-service and pre-service classes
  • Museums and historic organizations

Does LLF provide direct service?

Yes and No. LLF’s direct service trains trainers– teachers, parenting specialists, museum educators, mentors – to build local capacity to work with parents of young children.  The process includes on site modeling and technical assistance.

LLF does not run programs independent of our partners.

Isn’t visual literacy generally associated with museums and wealth?

Yes. That is part of its strength. One of the benefits of visual literacy is that it is relevant and easy to use across socio-economic lines. Visual literacy is a strength-based approach which “talks-up” to participants.

What are the hallmarks of LLF’s parent involvement programs?

  • Encouragement of and respect for parents.
  • Activities that build on what parents already know.
  • A structure that’s easy, playful, portable, and has substantive impact.

What are the benefits for teachers of using Visual Literacy strategies?

Teachers have a new tool for:

  • implementing their core curriculum;
  • accelerating achievement of language, math and problem solving outcomes for children;
  • helping children connect what they learn in school to what they see and experience at home and in the neighborhood.

Are LLF’s services only available in Washington, DC?

No. Although LLF’s work has focused on communities within a 100 mile radius of Washington, DC, we have managed programs in Ohio and Florida, and welcome partners from across the country.
